It satisfies an incessant emotional torrent while corresponding to nothing in the external world. It feels good, telling ourselves that people that do wrong always get what they deserve. And when we do get the opportunity to mete out justice, notice that it is invariably overkill, as if we are implicitly conceding the universe would not care if we didn't.
